Key to Samsung’s Success: Having the Marbles to Take it Straight to Apple

I apologize since it has been awhile since my last post. Traveling for work has taken me to New York where I’m loving the city, but I am getting rocked late night in the office. Rest assured, more is on the way!

A good number of people have asked me recently why Samsung is the only Android handset maker making a dent in the mobile market, and just as importantly, the overall public mind share of consumers. Well there are many reasons Samsung is the Android top dog:

  1. They are one of the few companies to have a completely vertically integrated supply chain. Heck, the processor and memory modules in the Iphone 5 are made by Samsung.
  2. They spend billions of dollars in R&D that dwarf any of their competitors.
  3. They have a presence in every consumer electronic and home appliance category you can think of… Yes I will make a call with my Galaxy S3 while reheating my lunch in my Samsung microwave while doing laundry in my Samsung Washer/Dryer
  4. They are even gangster status as a state backed “Chaebol” in South Korea which has given them the inside track and support independent companies only dream of.

Now all the above allows Samsung to design and manufacture high quality products at an insanely quick pace, but that’s only part of the reason they are Apple’s biggest headache… Put simply they have the marketing budget and marbles to take Apple head on. They aren’t afraid to sucker punch Apple in the face with direct ads. Case in point this new GS3 ad that satirizes the notorious people waiting in line for the new Iphone5 (I’ve been one):

It’s effective because it deconstructs the Steve Jobs “Reality Distortion Field”  using pure logic and easy to understand features. They are also not afraid to bombard your eyeballs at huge events, for example, being the official mobile sponsor of Chelsea and the 2012 Olympics.

You cannot look away and Samsung knows that

This brute force approach coupling a D-Day sized army of R&D resources with a massive well executed marketing agenda is a one-two punch that has Apple nervous. That can be seen in the PR drama that is the Apple v.s. Samsung court battles playing out all over the globe. Don’t get me wrong, Apple makes an incredible product and they are THE marketing geniuses, but Apple’s Federer has finally found his Nadal. Muhammad Ali discovering his Joe Frazier. Quasi applicable sports analogies aside, it is going to be a fun battle to watch.

TGIF 9/7: Football Sundays Made Awesome by 80 Years of TV Tech

Happy Friday my fantasy fanatics!

This week we are celebrating the glorious return of college and pro football. Ideal Sundays play out like this… Wake up still shaken from (insert Saturday night activity). Roll onto couch in semi comatose state. Rejoice by realizing there is 12 hours of football to be watched! Now thanks to technology there has never been a better time to be a lazy Sunday spectator. I present to you 80 years of TV broadcast technology courtesy my humble abode.

(Est. 1927) Over-the-air broadcasts via antenna dates back to the very beginning of television. Today’s ATSC antennas, that can be purchased for 20-30$, actually work very well for receiving the major networks in crisp high-definition.

(Est. 1990) The trusty cable box. This one happens to be from DirectTV, who in recent years, has introduced Sunday miracles such as NFL Sunday Ticket and the Red Zone channel taking fantasy viewing to the next level.

(Est. 2003) Yeah that is my 23 inch work monitor turned TV courtesy DVI to HDMI output from my buddy’s Mac Book Pro.

(Est. 2010) The laptop is your best friend, but it gets better when you don’t need a wire to beam the feed to your telly. The random Browns game can now be streamed wirelessly via Intel WIDI from the laptop in my bedroom.

(Est. 2011) Not in the photo is the emergence of the “second screen” in the form of the IPad I used to take this photo. I run both my ESPN and Yahoo fantasy apps as well as ESPN Game Tracker to keep up on all the action.

Hooray Football! Hooray Technology!

Entrepreneur Inside Look: The Reward Tag Story

One of the best parts about being in my mid 20s is that I am surrounded by hungry motivated peers who are getting involved in incredible ventures all over the country. It’s a pleasure to talk passion with friends ranging from budding architects, internet startup junkies, aerospace engineers, digital marketers, or even the misunderstood banker or two. I want to use KeysNKeys as an outlet to share the innovative happenings of my colleagues in the “Millennial” generation and explore how their creativity and ingenuity are being used to bring about the next big thing.

For this week’s entrepreneur inside look, I had the pleasure of chatting with Reward Tag founder Brian Nichols on his promising SoCal startup that trades off the belief that people are good and want to do the right thing, so why not reward them?  Reward Tag sells customers the ability to retrieve lost belongings by applying uniquely numbered  ”reward tags”. How does it work you ask? Continue reading

TGIF 8/17: How I Apparently Helped Instigate a Flash Mob in Peru Using Social Media

Happy Friday Everyone!

Today’s TGIF segment is a case study on the power of social media to inspire action in our communities….In this case it was a Gangnam Style flash mob which went down this week at the Plaza De Armas in Lima, Peru. My buddy Joe Johnson who lives in Shanghai hit me with the full story yesterday.

How did this happen you ask?

  1. First I discovered the international K-Pop video sensation that is Gangnam Style by viewing the video my buddy Dan Rojas posted on his Facebook account.
  2. I then shared said video to my colleague Joe in Shanghai, pleading him to please bring these moves to China.
  3. Joe then shared the video with his sister who I have never met, but am sure is a lovely person
  4. Sister of Sir Johnson proceeded to send it to her friend in Peru.
  5. Her friend in Peru became inspired and produced this video in conjunction with the Loki Cusco Hostel.

and voila flash mob in Peru. Hooray social media!

Also please educate yourself below if you haven’t seen the original Gangnam Style:
